Here is the first in a series I intend to complete focused on the cormorant sketches I made. My focus on this series is shape and value using very neutral colors. I have had fun experimenting with the effects on this one. I wanted to have a feeling of Sumi ink without using it. I started with a charcoal sketch on the canvas that was loaded with charcoal. I then used a sponge brush with watered down black gesso over the bird sketch. Then I back painted the background with white gesso. Then I when over it lightly with acrylic. Let me know what you think of this style.
