About

Artist Statement

I describe my paintings as stylized wildlife works. As a trained biologist I have a tendency to focus on very small details of the subjects I work with, but what I want to express in my art is the beauty of the whole organism, particularly if it is an animal most can’t find beauty in. That has led me to a more simple, stylized depiction of my subjects.

Influences to my work and style have included fellow artists such as Richard Gilkey, Lisa Walraven, Wil Taylor to name just a few. I also have a love for relief printing, but some past issues with my hands have steered me away from that path, but I believe you can see my love for that art in my current style. The gold honestly is only because I love shiny objects!

Biography

I have two inseparable passions: nature and creating. I have retired from a career as a wetland ecologist, but I continue to spend my spare time outside making natural history discoveries and bringing them back to the studio as inspiration and muse for my paintings. I have explored many mediums, but I currently find acrylics are my happy place – with some flourish of metal leaf to keep things spicey.

I am immensely lucky to call both Bellingham, WA and Ajo, AZ my homes as I enjoy the snowbird life. My work celebrates the diversity and magic of the natural world in both places.
